Potential
For almost 100 years, a large section of flawed Carrara marble lay in the courtyard of a cathedral in Florence, Italy. For decades it remained untouched and seemingly worthless. Then in 1501, a young sculptor was asked to do something with it. To most people, it was just a large chunk of useless marble, but to a certain talented young man, he saw great potential. He measured the block and noted its imperfections, and in his mind he envisioned a young shepherd boy. For three years the sculptor chiseled and shaped the marble skillfully. Finally, when the 18 foot towering figure of David was unveiled, his student exclaimed to Michelangelo, “Master, it lacks only one thing – speech!”
Focus Scripture:
“But the Lord said unto Samuel, look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord seeth not as man seeth. For man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.” I Samuel 16:7
In I Samuel Chapter 16, Samuel was given the task to locate and anoint the next King. The Lord simply said “I’m looking at more than the outward appearance and stature. It’s deeper than that, I’m looking at the heart to discover and bring to light the potential within a man.” In spite of imperfections and blemishes, God desired to tap into the unseen and unnoticed potential found within the heart of a shepherd boy named David.
There is no doubt that someone needs to hear these words today – you are valuable and of great worth in the eyes of the Master. You may feel like your life is filled with many imperfections and lacking in certain areas, but never forget that God sees things differently. What a priceless message of hope He has for each of us. There is such great potential in your life, and despite what has been said about you or done to you in the past, don’t ever forget that there are heavenly plans for you. God is not finished working and He deeply desires to make something beautiful in your life.
